I Swear You Will Be Fine

The first time I went to Joshua’s place on the 13th of August, we were both a little nervous as we had only started dating a week ago. To calm both our nerves, he slowly showed me around his home filled with pictures of his beautiful and loving family, Lego he built (there were tons), signed autographs of his favorite celebrities… And I remember thinking two things. My first thought was “wow, this guy really likes Lego and… celebrities?” and my second thought was “this family is so filled with love”. Then, I noticed the piano sitting in the living room. I asked Joshua if he played, and if he could play something for me. He sat down, wiped his palms on his thighs and said, “Okay, I’m not that good so I hope I play this right.” (Spoiler: He was fantastic at playing the piano and singing. He was just filled with humility). He played “A Whole New World”, one of the songs in Disney’s Aladdin. What he didn’t know was, that was my favorite movie as a child and my all-time favorite song.

Till today, I think that was the moment I fell in love with Joshua. Of course, there were many moments where I realized I was in love, and I vividly remember most of them. Thinking back, I think I was always in love. Every moment I had with him I look back on with so much love and envy. Envious of the love and laughs we had, envious of the time we had back then. Since 13th August, there was not a day that I didn’t hear Joshua play the piano or sing, even if it was for less than 10 minutes because he would abruptly end the piece with “that’s all you get”.

One of Joshua’s life goals was to write a song, and master the piano. He had written a song for me for my birthday, and all of us know that he has definitely mastered the piano. It was rare to not see him listening to music or hearing him play the piano or sing, so I created a Spotify profile and release bits of his music every month. In a way, I hope this helps him fulfil his life goals, the ones I know of and the ones I don’t.
