Day 169 – Breaking Beds

This is probably a strange thing to write about. But in your short stay on this earth, you have broken several beds…

As a child, you loved running towards the bed, and “crashing” face down into the bed. Absolutely loved it. Many times, this “crashing” would coincide with trying to wake Jess up. That would in turn result in a minor squabble between both of you.

As you got older, and gained more weight, these fascinations with “crashing” on the bed unfortunately resulted in somehow breaking some parts of the bed.

I still recall a few years ago when you called me at work, super worried, and stated in a panic, “Mum! Mum! I think I broke your bed! I just heard a loud cracking sound”. I remember saying, “Seriously Josh?”, but didn’t really believe that you could have actually broken it. When I got home however, the middle beam of my bed had snapped in two pieces! As I didn’t want to change the bed, what resulted was a very expensive repair and refurbishment of my bed.

Unfortunately, it didn’t end there. I think you repeated this same “mistake” on your bed at least once more, maybe twice. I’m not sure if you may have broken some hotel beds as well, as you frequently did this when we were on holiday as well. Oh Josh. I’m sure you’re highly embarrassed about this.

In recent years, this addiction of jumping on beds significantly reduced. When you changed rooms with Jess, you took over her old bed, and was not terribly interested in getting a new one. It was the only piece of furniture that did not match your room decor. Eventually late last year, you agreed to get a new bed (several of the slats had broken and were misaligned). Ammamma, Jess and I went to Ikea to get the bed. You were busy with schoolwork and were tired. We FaceTimed you and showed you the one we liked, and you agreed immediately.

The bed was delivered on 16th December 2024. Sha was at home and you were both assisting the Ikea delivery guys. I had ordered the bed with extra storage drawers on both sides of the bed, so we could keep all of your many collectibles. Alas, we didn’t even get to fill one of the 4 drawers. All you had put at the far end of the first drawer was a precious letter from Sha.

That bed would also be the place you took your last breath. At least it was a nice bed that you really liked.

It now still sits with the same bedsheets you last used. But there are a bunch of stuff toys- some of your Pokemons, Hedgehog and Snow Owl, the Phantom Bear. Knight frequently tries his luck when your room door is open, jumping up onto the bed and grabbing Hedgehog and running off whenever he can. I doubt he will break the bed though.

I wonder if you are happily breaking beds in heaven….

Love you darling,

Mum
