The One About Kismet

some time ago, i was asked to write a post about a place i worked at, how i got there, and what were my thoughts about being part of the place. i wrote about “kismet” and how it felt like fated or the people i met and worked with there were just part of the grand plan.

i was reminded of the word again a few days ago when i was catching up with a friend whom i hadnt spoken to for a while. he offered to read our handwritings to tell us what we needed to look out for, and i remembered that i had a picture of the card we wrote together – three of us.

he was surprised (he doesn’t get surprised often…so this says a lot), that all of our handwritings looked similar, and commented that ” wow you all have very similar handwriting, which means you all have similar characters.” i mean, i wasn’t surprised, and i knew it – i perhaps even wished it – that we got along precisely because at our core, we were alike in so many ways. but to hear it from someone who didn’t have the good fortune to know you, made me feel extremely lucky that i did.

so why kismet? i had to google the word again. Google simply says kismet meant fate or destiny, but if you dig a little deeper, kismet originated from the word “qisma” in turkish, but had its roots from arabic which referenced “lot”, “division” or “portion”. the word is frequently used to describe chance encounters but those that feel like it was “meant to be”, fortuitous or a significant life event. by now, dear reader, josh and everyone we love who writes here, you know where im heading (and repeating) with this – there is no chance encounter that we have josh in our lives. i found a better definition of kismet and it’s providence. again, i am not a religious person and am almost a deist, but knowing josh and inevitably trying to make sense of the “whys” and “hows” these days, i can’t help but to try and find meaning and justification.

like kismet, providence is related to a series of events, but unlike the former, providence describes the belief of a benevolent force that shapes or direct a course of events for a greater good or purpose. i have to believe that our friendship is kismet and maybe even providence because i cannot think of a better reason than you being a Godsent significance in my life – as a spark, as a friend, as someone i deeply admire and respect, and someone who still makes us laugh from way up there.
