We were at Dempsey Hill the other day. A lovely dinner treat from Sha and “Lynnda”. The time passed so quickly. Before we knew it, almost 3 hours had passed. The irony of it all. Here I was having dinner with some of your closest friends, but you were not with us.
The next day, Sha asked me, had you been there, where you would have been seated at the table. And I promptly replied, had you been there, I wouldn’t have been there. There is no way you would have wanted me to be with you all, and I guess that’s fair. Weirdly when ordering the meal, I also instantly thought of what you would have ordered for yourself. I think it would have been the wagyu beef burger.
Driving back from Dempsey, one day several years ago came to mind. We had gone out for lunch with Jess, Ammamma and Patta. You would have probably been about 12 or 13 years old. As usual, you got impatient after you finished your lunch and didn’t want to wait for us to finish. So you decided to take a walk while we finished our meal.
About 15 mins later, you came running back to us- sweating, panting, breathless and clearly terrified. Eventually you managed to calm down to describe what happened. You had gone off walking in the bushes when you heard some sounds. And then stumbled across a multitude of creatures, apparently looking directly at you. A whole family of monitor lizards. You even said they were making strange noises at you. You took a quick u-turn and came running back. You absolutely hated it, and would talk about this repeatedly for several days.
Even years later, everytime I brought them up, you would shudder, visibly shaken and repulsed!
It’s a cute memory, and one of those I don’t ever want to forget. Right now, I hope we don’t forget any of the memories. It’s all we have. But thank you for giving us so many.
I hope you don’t stumble across any Monitor Lizards in heaven!
Love you darling,
Mum
