Day 241 – Runaway Pup

I was driving a few days from one centre to another. As I approached the car park of the building, I saw a lady on my left, and a little dog on the right of my car. I first thought they were together. But then I saw the lady walk further away, and the dog walked in the opposite direction. I think it was a King Charles Cavalier, in shades of brown and white. I didn’t see a collar. I actually screamed, “Josh, what do I do?”. But I had to keep driving. After parking the car, I went walking around looking for the dog. But I couldn’t find it.

The whole episode reminded me of what happened a few years ago.

We were driving back from Ammamma’s house when we saw a little dog, galloping away. There was no one near the dog. It was a Scottish Terrier, in multiple shades of grey. It ran so, so fast. And cars and buses were dodging it. Personally, though I was worried, I had no plans to chase it. But there was no way you were going to ignore it.

We followed the dog by car, perhaps for 1-2km. The dog ran across a very busy main road, and squeezed through the fencing of an apartment. I managed to park the car just outside the apartment and you got off the car, running to look for the dog. Minutes later, you came out carrying it. I was thinking to myself, “Great. Now what?”. But you were so happy you had “saved” the dog. Its fur was super matted, and it was shaking. But it wasn’t wearing a collar. You told me we HAD to take it home.

So we did. We put him in the laundry room and gave him some water. Meanwhile, we called a number of vets nearby asking if anyone had reported a lost dog. We also put it up on a Lost Dogs group on FaceBook. Hours later, there was still no response. So we called SPCA. They arranged to come and collect the dog. I had a crazy thought of keeping the little fellow. But SPCA came along and removed him.

At the end of the day, the owner of the dog put a post up on FaceBook- complaining that we were too quick to call SPCA and had caused him a lot of inconvenience. You were so upset. But fellow members in the group were quick to criticise him and supported you wholeheartedly.

The whole episode was so exciting. And more than anything, showed the true heart you have. I think I am generally an ok person. But I don’t know if I would have gone on my own to help this pup. But you went out of your way to do such a nice thing. And I’m so proud that you did that.

So I’m sorry Josh. If that little Cavalier was truly lost, I didn’t get to help him. There are some things I just can’t do without you. But I’m sure you’re helping all the little dogs in heaven.

Love you darling,

Mum
