Dear Josh,
You are really the cutest. The way you show us signs is really amazing.
I walked into my clinic room this morning, somewhat feeling low, as many days have been lately. The room is always kept closed up. The windows are never open. And the main door only opens when patients come in.
As soon as I sat down, I felt something flying around my face. I couldn’t see what it was and initially ignored it. But a few minutes later, I saw it. A fly. A housefly. Relatively large. Didn’t appear very fast. So I set out to kill it.
I first used a small book to try to slam it. But it kept getting away, literally at the last millisecond. I had to start seeing patients. So I couldn’t keep at it. So I opened up all the large windows and the blinds. Quite sure it would fly away. I didn’t see it for a few minutes so I assumed it did.
And then while I was seeing my first patient, it came to annoy me again. I tried swatting it away with my hand. But it was adamant. My patient thought it was funny.
I then tried to keep the side doors open. But the fly just kept coming in the way. It even started to annoy my patients.
Between patients, I kept trying to attack it. With a big stack of papers, with my large cushion, and even with the big canister of antiseptic wet wipes. But it kept getting away. I was like a mad woman. Running from my desk, to the bedside curtains, to the pamphlets on the side table, and even to my spectacle case. But it kept getting away. I even got the cleaning Uncle to help me. It was a comical scene- both of us running around trying to get the little creature, but failing miserably.
One of my patients then helped me get a plastic bag and was sure she could get it. Alas, she also couldn’t.
3 hours later, and as I write this, the fly is still in my room. I just can’t seem to get it away. It’s really ridiculous how I can’t get rid of it. So much for infection control within the healthcare setting.
So why is this a sign from you? Well, one of your favourite series, if not your favourite series of all time, was Breaking Bad. And your favourite episode from this series was “Fly”. Bryan Cranston’s character Walt is obsessed in an all-night hunt for a single fly in the superlab. Analysis of the episode maintains that the episode is plotless, but is rich in symbolism, exploring Walt’s psychological state. Personally, I did not like the episode. But you absolutely loved it. (I really miss watching these types of TV series with you. My companions now are Caddy and Knight who don’t quite get it).
As I write this, the wretched fly is still in my room. Perhaps, my psychological state is questionable too….
But….I will take this as another sign. Coincidentally, or perhaps not coincidentally, Jess watched a play just 2 days ago starring Bryan Cranston.
I’d like to think you enjoyed watching me run around my room with the fly. Not sure if it will still be here when I come back to work.
Thank you for the amusement and the comedy!
Love Mum
