The One About Suffering

I’ve never been into poetry. Even tony questioned why there was a poetry book in our mail. but i find it increasingly hard to explain to others how it must’ve felt, how it still feels and how those who miss you will continue to feel. perhaps poetry lends us a voice through others, or maybe it’s you nudging us to find these messages again and again. Here’s one for you.

Deep Suffering

by thefallenpoet

People who experience deep suffering and

are still gentle to others

do not get enough credit.

To not let the hard things that happen to you win

is heroic work.

To drop the bitterness and still live with an open heart

despite it all is a massive gift to the world.

Because pain begs to be passed down

It whispers in your ear,

telling you to harden, to strike first,

to turn cold so that nothing can touch you again.

But you don’t.

You choose softness when life gave you reasons

to be sharp.

You choose kindness when cruelty would be easier.

You choose to hold, to help, to love —

even when no one sees the weight of that choice.

And maybe the world won’t always notice,

won’t always say thank you,

but someone, somewhere, will feel it.

A stranger, a friend, a child —

they will carry a little less pain

because you refused to give it away.
