Dear Josh,
Time for one of your cute stories. I’ve told you this many times I think. But just in case you don’t remember.
I think you were just under 2 years. Jess was running around with her friends in our condo grounds. You were in the playground, going up and down the slides and on the swings. Dad and I were watching over you.
At some point a couple of our friends walked past. Dad and I turned around to talk to them. It was just for a few minutes (no excuse, I know). When we turned back to the playground after the conversation, we couldn’t spot you. We looked into the little tunnel above the slide, but you were not there. And then we started panicking.
We called our helper to come down and stand in the carpark. I was terrified you had run out there. And we searched high and low for you, with Dad running in one direction, and me in the other.
After what felt like hours, but was actually just minutes, I spotted you. You were at the fish pond. Totally not bothered or frazzled. You were squatting down and leaning precariously close to the water, looking in intently, your head nearly touching the water.
I don’t remember what I said to you. I expect I yelled at you. But I do remember what you said to me.
“I came to see the fish!”
You were SUPER CUTE!
I can’t say there was any remorse. But then again, what could I expect from a 2 year old. Ultimately, it was our fault for taking our eyes off you.
The threat of losing you came so early. I guess I never really believed it would actually happen. Then again, maybe I did.
Anyway, I hope you are enjoying all the ponds and fish in heaven!
Love Mum
