Dear Josh,
Do you remember this conversation we had about Shalini and musicals? I think it was fairly early on in your relationship. I was trying to learn more about her and what your common interests were, as well as what we could do with her as a family.
I recall you said she didn’t really care much for musicals, and it was not something she went to often. I remember being a bit disappointed, and you had realised I was. I think you quickly said something like, “I’m sure she will come along Mum”.
Well, despite you warning us that she didn’t really like musicals, we took her along for one yesterday. It was one that Jess wanted to see for many years. We had missed it when it showed in Sydney. The title was also quite fitting. “Love Never Dies”. It was also fitting in being the sequel to the Phantom of the Opera, your ultimate favourite, I think.
I was a little worried that Shalini wouldn’t enjoy it. But every time I sneaked a look at her, she was beaming. Jess, of course, was beyond ecstatic. It was truly phenomenal, and I’m glad I got to watch it together with both of them. Throughout the musical, there were hints of the various tunes from the Phantom, and I was reminded of how you would play these songs often on the piano.
So Josh. We got it wrong. Shalini does like musicals. We started with a great one. And there’s another one planned for next week. One I had planned for you to go to, but never got the chance. I will tell you how that goes next week.
This morning when I woke up, I felt a little guilty. Guilty that we were having fun, but always having that constant reminder that you are no longer physically here. I also asked you to give me a few more signs to tell me you’re actually right beside us. As Shalini and I were walking up to meet Jess for dinner just now, this guy came up beside Shalini and kicked an empty water bottle. The noise startled us. Within a few minutes, he overtook us and crossed our path to meet his friend. The friend yelled out, “Hey Joshua”.
Love Mum
