Day 640 – Incorrect Recognition

Dear Josh,

I was driving into our condo car park last night and came across a couple walking a black dog. I looked at him and first thought it was your friend’s dog “Pluto”. As I came closer, I realised it wasn’t. This dog had a broader face. I heard your voice saying, “ummmm, no Mum”. That phrase was said rather frequently to me…

As I kept driving, another memory came to me. As a child, and even when you were a bit older, you would frequently “incorrectly” recognise various people.

There were a few occasions when you used to go to Sunday School. Dad and I would drop Jess and you off and then go to church. You would both catch up with us after. Several Sundays you would say you saw your form teacher from your primary school in church. It was many weeks later that I saw the lady you were talking about and clarified to you that it wasn’t her.

There were many such situations. Even when you were much older. You’d come back saying “I think I saw xxx”. Over time we came to only partially believe you.

A few days ago as I was driving to work, I saw a boy sitting at the bus-stop closest to our home. He had his head bent down looking at his phone, one of his hands against his face, headphones in his ears, black curly hair, and wearing a black Captain America t-shirt. From where I was, I could totally think it was you. Another incorrect recognition, but one I will happily accept.

Love Mum
