Day 668 – Turbulence

Dear Josh,

Coming home from being overseas is always harder. I was already thinking about it before I left London, and more so when I was on the plane. The timings however, sort of worked in my favour. The flight arrived 90 minutes before I was due at work for an important meeting. So when I walked into the house, I was focused on getting out in less than 10 minutes. When I saw your beautiful face on the picture at the entrance with the candle flame flickering away, I could only smile.

The flight back was so turbulent. I warned by Aunty K, but I still didn’t expect it to last that long. It felt like almost 75% of the flight was turbulent, and the seat-belt sign kept turning on.

I was reminded of one of our flights back with you from Sydney. I think you may have been just 2 years old, or maybe less. Was it Mama’s wedding? Maybe. You were just slightly under the weather and it was late at night. As the plane took off, you started kicking the seat in front of you. Nothing unusual for you. I was patiently waiting for the plane to reach cruising altitude so the seat-belt sign would turn off and I could let you walk around. It didn’t though. The turbulence was non-stop, so the seat-belt sign stayed on for what felt like ages. You were so restless, and I was struggling to keep you still.

So here comes another confession. I gave you some cough syrup…perhaps, just a couple of mls more. The result was you falling asleep soundly for the rest of the flight. For the first time in years, I even got to watch a movie on the plane. Bad Mum, I know.

Lately, a number of memories from your early childhood keep coming to me. Perhaps it’s because of the videos I’ve gotten a hold of. It’s nice. Almost feels like new memories.

Love Mum
